# Use the canvas

> Navigate the page and choose the right tool for text, artwork, and cleanup.

The toolbar controls pointer behavior. The inspector changes the selected layer's saved properties.

## Navigate and select

Use **Pan** to move the view and the status bar to change zoom. **View → Fit Window**, or `0` by default, fits the active page. Switching pages returns to a fitted view.

Use **Select** to pick editable layers; hold `Shift`, `Ctrl`, or `Command` to add or remove layers. Text layers can be moved, resized, and rotated. Resize and rotate handles appear for a single selection; a multiple selection can only be moved. A drag previews the transform; finishing commits it, and canceling restores the previous presentation.

## Choose an editing tool

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Text">
    Click with **Text** to create point text, or drag to create a paragraph frame. Enter the
    translation in the inspector and adjust [typography and fitting](/guides/typesetting).
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Brush and Eraser">
    **Brush** paints on the selected raster layer with the chosen color and diameter, or creates a
    new Paint layer when no raster layer is selected. **Eraser** needs a selected raster layer. Both
    tools also accept the cleanup layer that inpainting produced; painting on it makes that layer
    yours. Hold `Alt` and scroll to change the diameter.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Color picker">
    Sample the composited canvas with **Color picker**. Apply the sampled color to brush strokes or
    text styling.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Remove">
    Paint over source marks with **Remove**. Releasing the stroke runs inpainting on that area
    immediately and merges the result into the page's cleanup layer; the mask is not kept as a
    layer. The stroke is rejected while another processing job is running. See
    [cleanup](/guides/cleanup).
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

<Tip>
  Hold `Space` or the middle mouse button and drag to pan without changing tools. Scroll to pan,
  hold `Shift` to pan horizontally, or hold `Ctrl` to zoom at the pointer. `Escape` cancels the
  active gesture and clears the selection.
</Tip>

Single-key tool shortcuts are inactive while a text field is focused. See [keyboard shortcuts](/reference/shortcuts).
